CNN.com reported today that Steve Wynn, developer of The Mirage, Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas has accidentally poked a hole in his $139 million Picasso painting, “La Reve.”
According to the report, his response was, “Oh shit, look what I’ve done. Thank goodness it was me.” Would he really have billed a client $139,000,000 for ruining his painting? More so we should ask, to what does the value decrease when a Picasso has a small round hole in it? Is it now worth $139.00?
Mr. Wynn, if all you can consider is how much this fine work of art costs, then you have no understanding of the value of art. Do you think that your generous move to release the bidder from the sale of this item will truly resolve the issue? What if the bidder still wants to buy it? This art piece symbolizes a movement in art history; not to mention the inspiration for your hotel’s current show, La Reve. It should be respected for what it is, not for the size of its defect. Get your head out of the clouds, you filthy rich millionaire!
This brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, “You break it, you bought it.”
