Update on Weight Watchers
Sep 20th, 2011 by Jessica

My progress from my 33rd birthday to my 34th birthday

My progress from my 33rd birthday to my 34th birthday

I started Weight Watchers one year ago today on September 20, 2010 with no idea what to expect.  The results have been nothing short of a miracle.

My entire life has been changed for the better.

Before I started, I could barely put on my shoes.  My knees hurt, my back hurt, and it was difficult to sleep.  I was sweating nonstop, even at rest.  I couldn’t bend over to pet the kitties.  I was on all kinds of medication for blood pressure and other health issues.

I forced myself to eat healthy and follow the plan, and the weight started falling off.  Slowly, I got in the routine of walking 5 minutes per day, and then 10 minutes, and then 15 minutes.  When I began my elliptical machine routine, I could only do 4 minutes before I was gasping for air.  I was so proud the day I actually made it 10,000 steps on my pedometer!

Today, I can jog for 15 minutes.  I can walk for an hour without breaking much of a sweat.  I can even do 45 minutes on the elliptical machine following one of the workout routines.

It took a long time to get where I am now, but here I am.

Two months into the program, I was already down 22 pounds.  I lost my first 30 pounds within 3 months on Weight Watchers.  It practically melted off.  By five months, I had lost 43 pounds.  It took me the next month to lose another 7 pounds, as it became a little more challenging.  Then, I hit ONE-derland on May 29th!  My first 50 pounds were gone!

My doctor’s pride was evident as she followed along with me through my journey, watching me every step of the way.  Eventually, she was able to slowly take me off of all my medications because my health improved so dramatically.

As summer 2011 began, I purposely took a break from the plan to make sure I could maintain the weight loss.  I weighed 200 pounds at the beginning of the summer, and by the end I weighed 198.  I call that successful maintenance, for sure!  I wanted to give myself a little break so I wouldn’t give up the program.  I have learned what my limits are in terms of portions and I know what I can eat to maintain a healthy weight, without strictly tracking points every day.

Now I’m back on the plan and actively working toward my next goal: 175 by February 1.  I am so excited!  For our 10th wedding anniversary on February 2, 2012 I will weigh less than I did when we got married (200 lbs)!  I’m shooting for 175 because I haven’t been that “skinny” since my sophomore year in college back in 1997 when I met Andrew.

It’s going to be great to celebrate our 10th anniversary healthier and more vibrant than when we met 15 years prior!

Shooter’s World

Learning how to shoot a .22 pistol

Learning how to shoot a .22 pistol

I don’t like guns.  Let’s just get that out of the way first, shall we?  I think Andrew was very surprised when I told him I wanted to go to Shooter’s World.

Those who know me best will recognize that I like to learn about things.  I have a curious nature, and I like to understand how everything works.  If you ask my DaD, he’ll tell you that I used to follow him around the house trying to help me fix stuff all the time when I was a toddler.  The drawer faces in the kitchen, the furnace and stove pilots, the washing machine cylinders… Those were all fair game for me to tinker with.

I wanted to learn how to shoot a gun because it’s not something I am familiar with at all.  I’ve never held a real gun before.  I was (and still am) afraid of them.  In an effort to face the fear and to get some point of reference (pun intended), I went to Shooter’s World for some instruction on Friday for Ladies’ Night.

The staff members were very friendly and walked me through the entire process, from how to safely load the firearm, handle it, aim it, shoot it and safely unload it.  The range time and the gun rental were free for the first hour.  All I had to buy was a box of ammunition and a target.

It only took an hour, and now I have a much greater appreciation for the contestants on Top Shot!  I can officially cross this experience off my list of things to try before I die.

What’s on your list of things to try?  What is preventing you from doing it?

A Birthday Card from my Little Brother

My little brother Noah is seven years old.  He sent me a birthday card this year that is truly the best gift ever.

Hi Jessack Happy Birthday Love Noah

My DaD included a note which explains:

Jess,

Noah says that while the Pteranodon flies overhead you (in the orange jumpsuit) help Noah hoist the crystal of friendship to spawn the heart-shaped gem of happiness to kick-off Noah’s ultimate half-pipe demonstrations and celebration for your birthday!  I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Love,

DaD

PS – Noah learned how to skateboard a few days ago!

When Random Means Random
Aug 6th, 2011 by Jessica

I titled this blog Random Mews because I had no idea what I was planning to post on it.  Seven years have passed since it began, and as I have grown and changed hobbies the content has changed along with me.  It’s a fascinating personal log of historical significance that I am proud to have kept up over the years.  Trends have come and gone; technology has altered our lives dramatically during this time period.  I haven’t always kept up with the journal entries.  With the introduction of Twitter, my blog is now automatically updated with tiny tidbits of my daily life on a weekly basis. I would love to do the same thing with my Facebook and Google+ posts, too.

I love the idea of capturing our current daily lives for future generations.  I am so glad that the Library of Congress is preserving our Twitter posts.  Today, we use the US Census records to see what our ancestors were up to.  Can you imagine 70 years from now, being able to read your great-grandmothers Twitter posts and see all the crap she posted during high school on Facebook?  It’s like a yearbook on steroids, but with (hopefully) a lot more context.  I’m hoping at some point in the year 2081, somebody reads this blog and gets a few kicks out of it.

In the spirit of historical preservation, I’ve been occasionally posting excerpts from my Autobiography just for fun.  Many posts are simply pictures I have taken that I feel like sharing.  This blog is like a smorgasbord of whatever I feel like publishing at the time, which is a big part of what I love about it.

Right now, I feel like sharing some of my genealogical items of interest.  I’ve recently returned from a trip to Fort Wayne, Indiana where I visited the Allen County Public Library with my dear friend Sarah.  After our research trip, she sent me an RSS bundle with feeds to several Genealogy blogs that I have been reading with much interest.  It has inspired me to post and kick up some dirt to get the squeaky old blog gears churning again.

One important thing to note about this blog is that many of my posts are scheduled in WordPress.  That means I often take a day or two and post 6-12 months worth of content in one day, and slowly allow them to auto-post over time.  I do this for two main reasons.  First, I don’t have a lot of time to spend posting on the blog and organizing content.  When I get on a roll, I tend to generate a whole lot of content at once.  Secondly, seeing the posts go up over time offers continued motivation for me personally to continue pursuing some of my favorite hobbies such as photography and genealogy.  A few months from now I will have forgotten what I posted.  When I see it published, I get to read it with the rest of the world as if it were news to me too.

I hope you continue to enjoy my Random Mews.  I know I do!

Hello ONE-derland!

WW: You lost 50 lbs!

WW: You lost 50 lbs!

I’m telling you, Weight Watchers really does work.

I can’t BELIEVE the scale today showed 199!  That’s a total of 51 pounds lost, and 49 to go.  I started on September 20, 2010.  Just 8 months and 9 days later, I’m halfway to my goal weight of 150.  My measurements have changed dramatically.  I’ve dropped from 47-45-56 to 42-38-49, losing 5″ off my bust, 7″ off my waist and 7″ off my hips.  I could barely walk around the block when I started, and now I can JOG around the block with little effort.  I routinely walk up 4 flights of stairs at work, several times per day.  I replaced a majority of my liquids with water, although occasionally I sneak in a Diet Coke or a little bit of orange juice.

I can’t begin to describe the life changes that went into this journey already.  Suffice it to say that everything has changed.  My entire life routine including 100% of my eating habits and 100% of my activity levels are different from when I started.  We’re talking total transformation here.

I feel absolutely INCREDIBLE!  Happy Memorial Day, everyone!

What does losing 50 pounds look like?
Apr 30th, 2011 by Jessica

I wondered that when I started my journey less than 8 months ago on Weight Watchers.  My end goal was to lose 100 pounds… eventually.  Now I am halfway there.  I’ve dropped from 250 to an even 200, and I cannot even begin to describe the world of difference.  I am still following the plan and will continue to do so until I reach my goal.

Instead of words, I offer the following pictures as proof.  I think the smile on my today face says it all.  To all of you who are just beginning your journey, I offer these as motivation and encouragement.  You CAN do it!

I lost 50 pounds in less than 8 months!
