Back to School
May 30th, 2007 by Jessica

Today is the big day.  I’ve got the new shoes and the haircut, new folders and highlighters…  An older laptop, granted; does new memory count?  I’ve read the pre-class assigned text and reviewed the first week’s lectures.  All I can do now, is actually go to class.

Today I begin 49 weeks of nonstop homework.  I’m beginning the program for a Master of Science in Information Management from ASU’s WP Carey School of Business.  It’s going to be a long year!

Save the date: Graduation is May 10, 2008.

3D Testing
May 4th, 2007 by Jessica

Lots of you have written to me asking to see my first attempts at 3D imaging.  I went out early this morning to capture some shots of the parks in our neighborhood.  (I did get a few suspicious looks, but at least no Gilbert police were around to shoo me like usual.)

Thus, I present to you: The Train

————————

The full train, cropped a bit and sharpened

The full train, original image #1, cropped a bit and sharpened

The train in stereo image, cross your eyes to see it

The train in small stereo image (#1 and #4), cross your eyes to see it

The train in large stereo image, harder to see with crossed eyes, but the effect is neat if you can manage to make it work

The train in black and white anaglyph, use 3D glasses with Blue eye on the left

The train in black and white anaglyph, use 3D glasses with Blue eye on the left

The train in 3D color anaglyph, use 3D glasses again wtih Blue eye on the left

The train in full color anaglyph, use 3D glasses with Blue eye on the left

————————

Hint – The further you back away from the screen, the deeper the 3D effect…

I understand by switching the left/right images you can make the anaglyphs appear better with the Blue eye on the right.  It has to do with the way in which you align the Red with the RGB image.   All multi-images shown were done using the negatives from images #1 and #4.  I didn’t use #2 or #3 for any of these, as I haven’t quite figured out their purpose yet.

In case you’re wondering how I did these, I used a quad-lens 3D camera on 35mm film which was processed on uncut negatives, then scanned in with a transparency scanner and altered in Photoshop.

The technique is beautifully described at NASA’s website here for those who wish to try it with any two digital images.

More to come, as I have time, of course…

3D Mischief
May 1st, 2007 by Jessica

A friend of mine gave me a 3D film camera this weekend.  It takes regular 35mm film, so I thought I’d try it out.  Since I leave home when it’s just getting light and I get home when it’s getting dark, I figured taking some photos at lunch would suffice for testing.

I went outside my building to take some test shots with my new toy.  It has four lenses on the front, and people kept giving me strange looks and asking what the heck it was.  After about 10 minutes, I had taken two images.  Security approached me and asked me to come with them.

Two people reported suspicious activity, “some crazy woman out there with something I’ve never seen before”.  Security had to ask me to stop so people would stop freaking out.

I didn’t realize walking on the sidewalk and taking a picture was a crime!  It’s not like I was crawling under cars or hiding in the hot dog stand…

Geez people…  If I had been an ACTUAL criminal, nobody would have noticed.
