Vondall Euart Fitzgerald (#30 of 40) – My First 40 Finds in the 1940 US Census
June 30th, 2012 by Jessica

Welcome to My First 40 Finds in the 1940 US Census!  This blog series is a tribute to the first 40 entries that I located without the use of an index.

The 1940 US Federal Census was released online to the public on April 2, 2012.  Within the first three days, I had already found 40 families from my various tree branches.  I spent six months prior to the release researching the exact addresses and locations for these families so I could find them quickly upon the census release.

This 1940 US Federal Census entry features the family of my great-grandparents, Vondall Euart Fitzgerald and Jennie Mae (Fisher) Fitzgerald.  Vondall, age 31, had an 8th grade education.  He was born in Kentucky, and was the only person working to support his very large family.  He worked as a farm hand earning a total of $720 during his 52 weeks of employment in 1939.  Vondall’s wife, Jennie Mae, was 31 years old with a 9th grade education.  She was born in Indiana.

The first nine of the couple’s fifteen children were captured in this census:

  • Kenneth Euart Fitzgerald (13)
  • Leonard Harold Fitzgerald (12)
  • Dorothy Louise Fitzgerald (11)
  • Donald Morris Fitzgerald (9)
  • Lewis Victor Fitzgerald (8)
  • Katherine Alice Fitzgerald (7)
  • Florence Mae Fitzgerald (6)
  • Richard Delos Fitzgerald (4)
  • Robert William Fitzgerald (2)

The couple’s youngest child, Delmar James Fitzgerald, was born on April 5, 1940.  This census entry was enumerated on April 15 but according to official Census rules, little Delmar was not allowed to be “counted.”

My grandmother, Florence Mae (Fitzgerald) Cole is listed here as age 6.  She turned 6 on Census Day which was April 1, 1940. I am fortunate enough to have captured a family history interview with Grandma and she described her early years in this very home with all of her brothers and sisters.

The family lived in the same area as they did in 1935 but not in the same house.  According to my grandmother, by 1940 they had moved “a few miles” from the house where she was born in 1934.  Grandma had been certain they lived in Porter County.  I searched the entirety of Porter County census entries (hundreds of pages) before starting to search Lake County.  Surprise!  There they were!
